For the past two and a half weeks I've felt horrible. It began after feedings I would feel a little nauseous. At the time we were doing two cans at a sitting so we cut back to one can. This helped for a couple days but the nausea returned. As time went on I just began feeling worse. A trip to the doctor showed my PEG was infected and got me a week on the antibiotic cephalexin. This appeared to help but I was still a little nauseous after a feeding.

As always happens on the weekend I felt horrible all over again. I dread the emergency room though so I rode it out till Monday. The issue with that was that I was taking in very little fluid and got dehydrated. Got in to see the doc late Monday and he recommended I go to the ER for IV fluids and testing or at a minimum outpatient labs the next morning. As I said I dread the ER so we went for labs and two abdominal x-rays the next day.

We spent the remainder of the day getting water in me and I was beginning to feel almost human. Around 9:30pm that night my heart rate shot up to over 130 bpm. I dread ER's but there are some things you don't trifle with so off we went. They took me in right away drew five vials of blood, two chest x-rays, an EKG and urine test. To make a long story short the doc came in at 4am and told me everything was perfect. He did mention perhaps getting an ultrasound of the gallbladder.

It's four days later now and although I'm somewhat drained I'm feeling pretty good. None of us are sure what exactly happened but I'm back now and will get back to work.

I have a Phillips Respironics AVAPS unit that the VA supplied. I asked the VA if they would contact the salesperson and let me know what it would cost for the software so I could read the card myself. I already have a card reader so all I wanted was the software. The response ... they won't sell it to me. Wrong answer. You're going to tell a self proclaimed geek that's in front of a computer 16 hours a day he can't access the data he wants because you won't supply the software!?!?

As time permits I'm going to be snooping around the data card and try to figure out the data format. If/when I do I intend to write software that will read it and generate reports and make it available here for free. I'll keep you posted.

I spent today working on the documentation for DynaKey and Phrases. I finished DynaKey and got most of the way through Phrases. I need to include an example to phrase scripting using categories and it should be finished. It's amazing how hard it can be to describe how to do something. I'm trying to be simple and concise but we'll see.

I don't know why but it's not until this time at night that I find I can "get going". From the time I get up until probably 7pm I have problems focusing. For some reason around 7pm I wake up. The problem is my wife is just the opposite and since I need her help I can only stay up until around 11pm without making her suffer. That means into bed with 10mg of Ambien to knock me out which may very well be the cause of my issue. What ya gonna do? Hopefully my body will get used to this sleep pattern soon.

I spent some time that last couple days reconfiguring my development environment. I put together a continuous integration server using TeamCity on a virtual PC, changed over to Jira for issue tracking and tied them together along with Subversion. I now have a convenient and informative interface for looking at status of builds and issues.

While implementing TeamCity MSTest kept giving me issues so I switched over to NUnit. This unfortunately showed me just how lacking my tests are. Right now I'm working on the documentation. Once that is complete I will release 0.8.5 which will mostly be just documentation and a few big fixes. After that I'm going to add tests and shoot for 100% coverage. I know that as it stands now I can't get there but that's what refactoring is for.

Today was a long day. We got up at 5am and got on the road at 6:30 for the two hour drive to the facility that was to install my Permolock. The Permolock is a device used to lock a Permobil wheelchair (C400 or C500) in place in a vehicle. The closest place that is certified to install them is two hours away and thus the drive.

Permolock

We ended up having to take a detour due to construction and got there a little after 9am. By the time the tech got started it was almost 10am. We got the position measured and marked and proceeded to wait. It took three tries and adjustments to get everything working correctly and then we began the two hour drive home. We finally made it in the door just before 5:30pm. I'm dragging and for today I'm done. Oh but before I go the Permolock works great.

For those of you that missed the ALS TDI Quarterly Research update last night there was some good news or at a minimum cause for hope. They have discovered a substance which within the mouse model helps maintain weight, slows onset and increase survival. This is a first. Granted this was in a mouse not a human but ALS TDI has in my opinion a good track record in showing comparable results between mouse and human.

They record the sessions and put them on the website for later viewing. If you were unable to attend it should be online within the next couple days at ALS TDI.

Jeff.Faull C500 RSI got my new power chair from the VA today. It took almost 13 weeks from the initial measurement until I actually got it. It is a Permobil C500 RS just like the one below except mine is blue. So far I'm very happy with it but it's only been a few hours. Tomorrow I intend to put it through its paces and see what it can do. Expect a review once I've had some time in it.

Jeff.Faull This is going to be a rant and will touch on both politics and religion so fair warning.

Every morning when I get up I check the web for the latest information. Almost every morning I'm astounded by the behaviors I see. Let's start with politicians. I know the bar is that high. As Robin Willaims once said, “Politics: 'Poli' a Latin word meaning 'many'; and 'tics' meaning 'bloodsucking creatures'.” It seems to me that the political process is turning more and more into an "I'm right, you're wrong" contest than one that is meant to ensure the health, safety and prosperity of the people. I speak here of the US but there are similar examples all around the world.

Let's look first at the House and Senate. Once these were forums for sometimes heated but intelligent discussions on what was to be done to ensure our country grew and prospered. There were differing ideologies but the only thing an aisle was used for was to get to your seat. Today that aisle has become a chasm. Nowhere did the founding fathers specify a two party system. Why? Because their fear was that party loyalty would overcome the good of the nation. I believe that is exactly what has happened. Here's a simple fact. Whether you're a Republican or a Democrat you're not always right. There are times when a conservative approach is the better solution just as there are times when a liberal solution is more appropriate. Although I don't believe there are many people who would argue against that we see a failure to compromised or admit that another line of thought is more appropriate daily. I bet I can describe the scene on CSPAN for any given moment that the House or Senate are in session. Whatever member has the floor will speak to his or her viewpoint in some rare cases actually making a viable case. While that is happening the majority of the floor will not even be paying attention or even present. At some point the speaker will refer to the aisle and most likely make an accusation. Once the floor is yielded the member from the other party will refute most of what was said while using the aisle as a means to throw some barb. How exactly can you have an intelligent discussion when no one is listening and it begins with accusations?

This type of behavior has gone well past the halls of Congress. In New York state senate the Democrats having lost the majority snuck into the building through the back, locked the doors to the Republicans and refused to surrender the gavel. I mean seriously that is the kind of behavior I'd expect from preteens not elected officials. Republicans preach family values and then pepper the news with members caught in affairs. Is hypocrisy the new platform? This attitude then continues into any discussion. Look at any message board or news posting comments about a political matter and in no time at all it will become a finger pointing session.

This same lack of tolerance holds true for discussions on religion. People who believe and those that don't will more often than not end up at each others throats. I don't know how many times I've seen threads quickly deteriorate into name calling sessions over religion. Here's another epiphany. People of faith don't need your approval and people who don't believe don't want to be converted. Why do people quote scripture into threads that don't call for it and on the other hand why would someone take offense if another said they would pray for you?

I simply don't understand why people of differing opinions are no longer able to respect one another enough to discuss their differences either to a point of compromise or if their differences are irreconcilable simply agree to disagree. There have been very few times in my life where if I step back and try to see things from another's view point that I can't see valid points. Politics and religion tend to be topics which illicit strong reactions and from time to time tempers will flair. This is a fact of human nature but how often do you see someone admit that they got carried away and apologize? Why is it that we no longer respect each other enough to show that simple courtesy?

My final point before closing is that although politics and religion can be emotional topics so can treatment for a disease such as ALS. As proposed treatments come to the net remember that even if you believe them to be the answer that until they are proven all they are is a belief. If you don't believe the proposed treatment will work then comes the time for intelligent discussion. If you believe the present and defend your facts. If you don't believe then question those facts or offer alternatives. Conjecture and hearsay have no place when discussing treatments that may end in mortality.

In closing I will say this. I don't care if your a Democrat or Republican, whether you're Christian, Hindu, Muslim, Jewish, an atheist or agnostic, whether you're black, white or Hispanic, what country you hail from or what language you speak. I will do my very best to listen to and respect your point of view and all I ask in return is that same respect.

ALSMatters logoI figured I'd throw a post on my blog in an effort to get others started and add some things about the site. The site is working fairly well although there are a couple of bugs I'm chasing. I need your help to make it work though. A community site isn't much use without a community. I realize it's early on in the site's life but as you get comfortable I could use your help. Any of the following would be much appreciated:

  • Make blog posts. You have your own blog if you want it. Tell your story, speak your mind and share your thoughts. You also have ability to comment on others posts.
  • Reviews. This is an area which to my knowledge is unique among ALS sites. I know that I have often looked for product reviews from PALS on various items and this will give us just that. If you have an opinion on an item post it. If the item is there then list it. If you need help please post in the forum and I'll make sure your questions get answered.
  • If you have an upcoming event like a walk or whatever add it to the Event List. Again if you need help post in the forum.
  • Utilize the chat room.
  • Make use of the forum.
  • Update your profiles.
  • And last but by no means least share your thoughts, likes and dislikes about the site. Although I can't guarantee I'll fix everything I can guarantee I'll try.
There are a multitude of ways to communicate on this site. Comments are enabled on almost everything. So please help me to make this site what you want it to be.
